“Sub-Saharan Cities under Climate Change – Exploring the Adaptive Capacity of Peri-Urban Settlements in Coastal Dar es Salaam, Tanzania” is the title of the first international workshop of the ACC Dar Project. The workshop took place from the 6^th to the 8^th of June, 2012, at Ardhi University, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The main goal of the workshop was to evaluate results of the investigation of local adaptive capacity, involving inhabitants of the peri-urban fringe and with representatives of local institutions. In addition, the meeting provided an opportunity for an intense exchange of ideas and information between project researchers and other European and African academics regarding the two guiding questions of the workshop:

How can people’s capacity to adapt to environmental change in peri-urban areas of Sub-Saharan cities be assessed?

How can local institutions’ capacity to support peri-urban people in their efforts to respond to environmental change be assessed?

The closed-door session of the program was carried out over the course of two days. After the presentation of results and related evaluations, participants visited several peri-urban settlements in the Kinondoni Municipality and divided into working groups to further discuss the questions raised by evaluators.

The public session, addressed to professors and students of Ardhi University, opened with a presentation of the ACC Dar Project. Guest speakers then offered an overview of the climate and environmental changes predicted for coastal cities of the African Continent, and an analysis of the contribution of traditional practices to scientific knowledge of such phenomena.
